Ground Cover & Crop Covers

Ground covers are covers placed directly onto the ground; there are no barriers or structures between the cover and the ground. Using ground covers in your garden, yard, farm or growing area helps with moisture retention, weed prevention, and soil erosion control. There are many ground cover options available.

Important factors in choosing which ground cover is right for you:

  • The amount of sunlight in your growing area
  • The climate in your area
  • The types of plants you will be growing

Crop Covers

Crop covers are made of a special lightweight weave designed specifically for pest exclusion. They have a minimal temperature-raising effect, which is good in places where the weather is particularly warm. Crop covers can be tucked into the dirt, tacked down with some kind of hooks, or simply held down by a weight of some kind. They are so light, it does not take much to hold them in place.

Ground Cover

Our Ground Cover is a tightly woven, black polypropylene fabric that helps control weed growth and retains moisture in the soil. Since it is a woven product, water and nutrients will seep through, eliminating unsightly and hazardous water puddles. Each roll has a green plant line every 12" to aid in plant placement.

Plastic Mulch

Plastic Mulch aids in water retention and weed prevention. Plastic Mulch is extruded from clear polyethylene resin into sheets of film of varying colors, widths and lengths.

Black Plastic Mulch modifies the micro-climate around plants, enhancing growth, yield, and quality of horticultural crops.

Red Plastic Mulch reflects intensified red light to the developing plants, which increases their photosynthetic capacity.

Blue Plastic Mulch reflects intense blue light back up onto plants which triggers a fruiting response in summer squash, cucumbers, and melons.

Olive Plastic Mulch is used on most vine crops for early harvest and increased yield. Ideal for heat-loving plants, sunlight is converted to heat at a higher rate, exposing crops to warmer air.

Planters Paper Mulch

Planters Paper Mulch is an eco-friendly alternative to plastic mulch. It is biodegradable so there is no labor requirement for field removal.

Low Tunnels

Low tunnels are ideal for the early production of many vegetable crops. They are constructed by installing 6-foot wide sheets of either slitted or perforated plastic over wire hoops that are spaced about 4 feet apart. To prevent wind damage, the cover is pulled taut over the hoops (but not stretched), and the edges are secured with soil. Generally, the cover is left over the plants for 3-4 weeks. The slits and perforations provide daytime ventilation, eliminating the need for manual venting.

Red Plastic Mulch Film

USDA and university researchers have found that red mulch enhances the growth and yield of several vegetable crops, including tomatoes. The color of the mulch changes the intensity of certain wavelengths of light, and the modified light increases plant growth and yields.
